Applications open for Zongo Media Literacy Fellowship

Open to residents of Zongo and underserved communities within Accra

DEADLINE: 31/01/2025

The Media Literacy Development Foundation welcomes young content creators and residents of Zongo and underserved communities in Accra who are digitally savvy and/or are interested in creating impactful digital media content to apply for the first edition of the quarterly Zongo Media Literacy Fellowship Programme.

This programme, conducted in collaboration with partner institutions, encourages the creative exploration of digital content creation tools and develops youth media literacy skills.

Throughout the experience, Fellows will receive hands-on training and support as they learn, create digital media content, and curate their professional digital presence.

Who Should Apply?

All young people of any educational background between the preferable ages of 18 and 35 with a smartphone may apply. Priority access will be given to women. This programme is designed for youths of underserved communities who have not had opportunities to work with digital technology in depth.

Benefits

The fellowship focuses on understanding media and how it shapes our world, developing critical thinking skills to evaluate media content, learning how to create media messages responsibly and navigating media in a digital age.

It will help in building the confidence of fellows, providing learning strategies, and fostering career connections. Zongo youth who wish to produce digital media content in local Ghanaian languages are particularly encouraged to apply.

Selection Process

Applicants will be selected for the fellowship based on their need for training opportunities and how this programme aligns with their professional goals. Since Fellows are expected to commit to the full 1-month training and workshops, this may not be a good fit for those who are fully employed or are in school.

Attendance at all workshops and meetings is a requirement for completion. Fellows must be willing to commit upfront to a minimum of two sessions a week at the Literacy Hub of the  S.S. Shardow Community Centre at Accra New Town. In addition, fellows will choose two projects – independent and group – based on their interests.

Programme Details

The programme will select a cohort of up to 10 students. Fellows will meet as a cohort with the Zongo Media team a week before the start of the programme for an orientation to the programme. In addition, fellows will participate in hands-on workshops from the Zongo Media Network on various topics. Some of the workshop topics to be offered are:

  • Digital Media Literacy
  • Fact-checking
  • Presentation Skills
  • Digital Media Production
  • Digital Media Management
  • Digital Marketing

The fellowship will be carried out through the guidance of the Zongo Media team in bi-weekly workshops, co-working time at the Zongo Media Academy, and one-on-one consultations offered by experts across the Zongo Media Network. By the end of the programme, fellows will have a completed digital project and a personal project that will demonstrate mastery of their digital media skills. Collaboration within the cohort and small-group work is expected. Each fellow will present their completed project at a culminating event and receive personalised feedback.

Fellows will receive the following:

  • Priority access to equipment and networked spaces
  • Support from expert staff across the Zongo Media Network
  • Snacks will be provided at required meetings and workshops
  • Certificates will be provided at the end of the programme
  • Projects will be promoted on Zongo Media platforms and affiliate media
  • Internship opportunities and recommendations
  • Stipend based on the availability of funding
